We are happy to announce that participants in the 4th Annual PhD Democratic Practices Seminar in Stockholm in November will have have opportunity to engage with Trinh T. Minh-ha and her films.
We therefore urge all DemPrac2019 participants to arrive in Stockholm by noon on Saturday 23 November 2019. Then you can participate during the whole Sunday at Crosscuts Film Festival when Trinh T. Minh-ha offers us a Masterclass and screens her film “Forgetting Vietnam.” We will also watch her film “Reassemble” on Monday, and for those interested, a third of her films is on offer on Wednesday after the seminar ends. Her Masterclass and film on Sunday and Monday will prepare for our Wednesday focus on exploring the question of film as decolonial dialectic.
By arriving at noon on Saturday 23 November you will also be able to watch the film “Badiou” on at 16.00 which prepares for Day 1 and Day 2 and foregrounds our seminar’s departure point in political theory.
If you can come even a day earlier, on Friday 22 November you can watch “The Push” on the housing crisis, which will be introduced by Saskia Sassen who we read and discuss in our Monday session.
Masterclass and films are integral and obligatory for DemPrac2019
These films offers a great opportunity to relate film to critical thinking and practice. To span from Trinh T. Minh-ha to Badiou and Sassen through the register of film is a great opportunity for our DemPrac2019 seminar.
Given this we want to see the Masterclass and two of the films as integral to the seminar and you should try to make every effort to be hear from them (phrased earlier as “obligatory”). Of course, if you cannot fit in extra nights in Stockholm due to your travel budget, or if you have already booked your tickets and cannot re-schdeule, we of course understand. Please let us know if this is the case.
So, please don’t feel bad about not being able to make it as it is our fault for not having been able to send out this information about the film schedule earlier.
Provided this caveat, we will integrate as obligatory attendance at the Masterclass, the Sunday film “Forgetting Vietnam,” and the Monday film “Reassemble”. We further highly and warmly recommend all participants to watch the Saturday film “Badiou,” and if possible the Friday film “The Push,” and Wednesday film “Night Passage.” Below follows the schedule just discussed with links and information further below, alongside the whole Trinh T. Information about the films
The Sunday film is “Forgetting Vietnam” by Trinh T. Minh-ha which is screened at 14.00 on Sunday 24 November 2019 at BioRio. No cost.
The Monday film is “Reassemblage” from 1982. Filmed in Senegal, Minh-ha uses the camera to problematise the gaze of the ethnographer. The film is 40 minutes long and and after the film Minh-ha will be discussing her work in person for 45 minutes with Malin Wahlberg, professor in Film Studies at Stockholm University. “Reassmeblage” 1982 at Bio Victor and conversation with Minh-ha afterwards. 25 Nov 2019 at 18:00 to 19:30.
The Wednesday film is “Night Passage” from 2004. It is inspired by a science fiction novel by children’s author Kenji Miyazawa and follows a young woman who travels with a friend and a young boy on a night train in the passage between fiction and reality.
